Amateur audience experiments to discover low frequency radio astronomy

The Society of Amateur Radio Astronomy (SARA) is providing a lot of educational and public outreach resources for radio astronomy. Concerning low frequency radio observations, the following two projects are particularly well adapted:

Sounds of space

Understanding low frequency radio data is difficult for the general audience. Transcoding electromagnetic spectrograms into audio sounds can be a convenient way to display radio data, but requires introductory precautions. First, there is no audible sounds in space. Then the frequencies of the radio bands are usually not in the audible frequency range hence requiring a frequency translation of the signals. The presented sounds are thus a transposition of electromagnetic signals in an audible form.
