Description

This collection contains all data products acquired by the Cassini/RPWS/HFR instrument (Gurnett, 2004), and their derived and ancillary data products (Zarka 2004, Cecconi 2005, Lamy 2008, Lamy 2011, Schippers 2013).

The data content is described in details in the Cassini/RPWS/HFR LESIA/Kronos Data Collection Description (Version 1.8) document (Cecconi 2021).

Content

The repository is composed of a series of directories, which name indicates the time interval of interest. The generic naming convention is yyyy_ddb_dde/, where yyyy is the year, ddb is the beginning day of the period (included), and dde is the ending day of the period (included)

Each directory hence represent a year quarter of data products. A year yyyy is divided in 4 directories: yyyy_001_090/, yyyy_091_180/, yyyy_181_270/, yyyy_271_366/ (even if only 365 days).

Each directory yyyy_ddb_dde/ contains the following subdirectories:

  • bg/ background files
  • ephem/ 1 min resolution ephemeris+attitude files per source (Jupiter, Sun, Saturn, Earth ... from team page tools, depending on the period studied) k/ kronos files retrieved from Iowa
  • img/ image files (png and jpg) for web server usage.
  • index/ level 3 data products (2D source location index).
  • k level 0 data products (kronos files, raw telemetry format)
  • k_bad level 0 data products (corrupted files)
  • lis/ mode lists (files yyyyddd.lis - see DescrModesLis.doc)
  • loc/ level 4 derived product (3D location data)
  • n1/ level 1 data products (raw, sorted)
  • n2/ level 2 data products (calibrated), also accessible with doi:10.25935/xs9j-nd90.
  • n3/ [not implemented]
  • n3a/ [not implemented]
  • n3b/ level 3 data products (goniopolarimetric results, analytical inversion, 3 ant.), also accessible with doi:10.25935/f8ns-0911.
  • n3c/ level 3 data products (goniopolarimetric results, analytical inversion, 3 ant., no linear polarization)
  • n3d/ level 3 data products (goniopolarimetric results, analytical inversion, 2 ant., no linear polarization), also accessible with doi:10.25935/5jfx-dh49
  • n3e/ level 3 data products (goniopolarimetric results, analytical inversion, 2 ant., known source location), also accessible with doi:10.25935/9zab-fp47.
  • n3f/ [not implemented]
  • n3g/ level 3 data products (Flux density, cal. short_dipole/Galaxy)
  • pdf/ summary plots in pdf
  • skr/ level 4 derived product (selected and filtered SKR data)

Other data directories for limited periods corresponding to specific events in the Cassini lifetime include:

  • Turn_on/ data from instrument post-launch turn-on: 1997298 to 1997299
  • Venus1/ data from first Venus flyby: 1998116
  • Ico_m14/ data from first test period (launch+14 months): 1998364 to 1999005
  • Venus2/ data from second Venus flyby: 1999175
  • Earth/ data from Earth flyby: 1999227 to 1999257

These directories have the same subdirectory structure as above.

Extra directories are present and contains derived datasets:

Coverage and sampling

  • Time range: 1997 to 2017
  • Time resolution: 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
  • Spectral range: 3.5 kHz to 16.1 MHz
